Ageing Skin

Facial ageing is an inevitable sign of the ageing process in general.

However, it can be accelerated significantly by certain habits and conversely, delayed by positive lifestyle effects.

The main reason for premature ageing is sun damage, also referred to as photo aging; in fact over 90 per cent of the therapies used for rejuvenation are aimed at damage that has occurred as a direct result of repeated exposure to sunlight.

Skin and facial ageing is caused by the following factors:

  • Photo Ageing – caused by repeat exposure to sunlight. UV rays penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and can result in surface damage such as brown blemishes and more prominent blood vessels. Fine lines and wrinkles can appear due to damage to the collagen and elastic tissue in the deeper skin layers.
  • Smoking – reduces the amount of oxygen supply to all body organs including the skin by narrowing the blood vessels. This in turn causes the skin to function much less efficiently and that means that less collagen and elastin are produced. Smoker’s blood does not carry as much oxygen as that of non-smokers. Smoking also causes premature ageing because it damages the enzyme which controls production of collagen in the skin.
  • Alcohol – alcohol is a factor in certain types of skin ageing. It can cause repeated then constant enlargement of the blood vessels resulting in the characteristic red-faced appearance of many drinkers. Repeated reddening leads to spider veins. Alcohol can also reduce the absorption of key vitamins and nutrients that the skin requires.
  • Diet – Rapid and severe dietary restrictions can cause skin sagging on the face.
  • Increased activity of some facial muscles – increased muscle activity around the eyes and mouth can lead to an increase in the number of lines.
  • The skin becomes dry - as the sebaceous glands become less active.
  • The skin loses its elasticity - as the production of collagen slows down and wrinkles begin to appear.
  • The facial contours become slack as muscle tone is reduced.
  • Blood circulation becomes poor - which interferes will skin nutrition and the skin may appear sallow.

In terms of treatments for an ageing skin, there are a number of treatments available. Facials are excellent for hydrating and plumping the skin and are also great for relaxation and stress reducing purposes. Facial lifting machines visible lift the skin to reduce wrinkles using micro-electric current. Often referred to as the ‘Non-Surgical Face Lift.’

Chemical peels can be used on an aging skin; this involves the application to the skin of a chemical that causes shedding of the surface skin layers. By shedding these layers, a new skin layer is formed which is healthier. The peel is applied to the skin and loosens the dead surface skin, revealing brighter, smoother, younger looking skin beneath. Peels can also treat superficial discolouration, superficial blemishes and scars. They can also help to reduce fine lines and promote a healthy glow by reducing the build up of dead cells in the outer layers of the skin.

Microdermabrasion, a treatment where very small crystals are sucked across the surface of the skin causing the removal of the surface skin cells, is another effective anti-ageing treatment. Microdermabrasion can treat areas of whiteheads, blackheads aswell as dark superficial scars and irregular pigmentation. Microdermabrasion brightens dull skin, making it more vital and alive. Lasers and IPL (Intense Pulse Light) can help rejuvenate the skin by treating patchy brown sunspots (liver spots), thread veins and fine lines. They also target wrinkles and result in a more youthful looking skin by stimulating the skin to produce collagen and minimise fine lines.

Botox and facial fillers can be used to treat lines between the eyes and the more severe horizontal forehead lines. Botox is also used to smooth away crow’s feet creating an appearance of smooth, youthful skin.

During your Beau Visage Consultation, your practitioner will be able to explain and educate you on the wide range of Facial Rejuvenation treatments available to you. This will mean that over time you will be able to achieve the desired look of youthful, smooth and healthy skin. Beau Visage will be able to track your progress, to ensure that your treatment plan is working efficiently and achieving the required results.
